Louis Pia
July 25, 1928 - September 4, 2009
Louis J. Pia, age 81, of Avondale, PA, passed away on Friday, September 4, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Norma M. (Pavese) Pia, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.
Born in Ontario, California, he was a son of the late John and Josephine (Viarengo) Pia.
Mr. Pia was a second generation mushroom farmer. His family started growing in the late 1920's. He was the former owner/founder of Kaolin Mushroom Farms, Kennett Square, PA, which he established in 1962. Kaolin Mushroom Farms is still owned and operated by his family and includes the Pia fourth generation.
He was a founding member of the American Mushroom Institute, originally in Kennett Square, PA, now in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Pia was an entrepreneur, owning many businesses over the years in real estate development, various farming and dairy operations. He held three patents relating to mushroom growing equipment.
Louis was involved with the community, he previously served as a board member of the Chester County Economic Development Council.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to tell jokes, stories, and on occasion shared a song or two. Louis was a car enthusiast and collected various types over the years. In earlier years, he traveled extensively both domestic and abroad for business and pleasure. He played golf and enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Joan Aschiero and Yolanda Lunatici.
A viewing will be held from 4-8 P.M. on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 and from
9:30 - 11 A.M. on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Church, 8910 Gap Newport Pike, Avondale, PA. A funeral Mass will begin at 11 A.M.on Thursday at the church. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Kennett Square, PA. Memorial donations may be made to Neighborhood Hospice, 400 E. Marshall Street, West Chester, PA 19380 or Visiting Angels, 557 Exton Commons, Exton, PA 19341. Arrangements are being handled by the Houck & Gofus Funeral Home, Inc. of Pottstown, PA.
